Favourite beach?

Golden sands of Ponderosa Beach in Mallorca

My favourite beach is officially called Ses Casettes des Capellans but most people refer to it as Ponderosa Beach after one of the trendiest beach bars on the island. It is located at the beginning of the Playa de Muro stretch of beach at the far end of Alcudia and enjoys fantastic views across the bay towards the Aucanada headland. The sand is fine and white and the sea is clean, graduating from turquoise through to deep blue. At the rear of the beach are several “chirinquitos” or chill out bars. For me, there’s no better time of day than early evening enjoying a cooling drink as the heat of the sun is cooled by the late afternoon sea breeze.

Must-see historic attraction?

Gothic waterfront cathedral of Le Seu in Mallorca

The Cathedral of Santa Maria, or La Seu as the locals call it, is an iconic sight on Palma’s seafront and is breathtaking in size and beauty. Take in the panoramic views across the fountains in the lake to the seaboard side of the house and look out for the territorial Peregrine Falcon chasing away the seagulls from the ramparts!

Top village or town for a visit?

Streets of Pollensa Old Town

Old Pollensa town has it all! Wonderful restaurants offering a wide range of cuisines to suit every taste plus some simple tapas bars and cafés. The main square comes alive at night and tables are quickly filled with locals and tourists alike enjoying a cava or two. For the more energetic try a walk up the 365 steps of the Calvario to the chapel at the top and take in the views to the coast whilst cooling off with a well-earned ice cream from the kiosk. Try an early evening climb with the incentive of a memorable dinner to follow.

Favourite villa with a view?

Countryside views from Villa L'Olivar in Mallorca

L’Olivar is a long time favourite of mine and is the blueprint example of a quality Balearic, holiday “Finca” that I use when choosing our countryside villas. My tip for the smart traveller is to make a beeline on arrival to one of the pool facing bedrooms on the first floor – the views from the balcony are wonderful! If I could, I would spend every holiday just sitting on the shaded terrace or cooking on the great “dad’s own BBQ” whilst taking in the lovely, panoramic views of my favourite place on Earth, the Pollensan countryside.

With your Mallorcan wishlist beefed up by Mark’s top tips, it’s simply time to find your dream Mallorca villa and resort.
