Buckle up and discover the breathtaking Amalfi Coast by car. This stunning coastline will take you and your family on a journey along beaches, through the rolling Italian hills as well as ancient cities and breathtaking cliffs, all from the comfort of the driving seat.
Whether you have a day to spare or just a couple of hours, we’ve put together a great route for you to explore. And with plenty to see out the window, especially when the kids use a BubbleBum booster seat, there’ll be less “are we there yet?” and more “can we stop again!”.
Starting from the town of Sorrento, take the wheel to discovery…
Sorrento to Pompeii
We’ve all heard of Pompeii, the ancient Roman city buried under ash and preserved for centuries due to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. And if you’re staying along the Amalfi Coast, this fascinating town is only an hour’s drive away from your door.
You can drive straight there along the SS145, but keep an eye out for the magical gems along the way and turn this trip into a day of discovery. Once you’re out of Sorrento you’ll reach Montechiaro with the Marina di Equa offering panoramic coastal views. Feeling peckish already? You can have a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants along the marina.
When you’re ready to move on, the route takes you inland past other towns like Vico Equense before you drive into the Parco Regionale dei Monti Lattari. This wildlife park is home to the Lattari Mountains which on a clear day you’ll be able to see during your drive. Not long after leaving here, you reach Pompeii!
On your journey back, there are several beaches to stop off at so if your legs are tired from all the walking, take a dip in the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Relax and paddle at Garden Beach or Lido da Vittorio, the perfect way to break up the journey home.
And on to Naples…
If you haven’t had your fill of history and wonder yet, why not add an extra stop to your trip before going back? Keep on travelling around the Gulf of Naples until you reach the city, more locally known as Napoli. The third biggest city in Italy, you’ll find plenty to see, do, eat and drink.
As you take the E45 from Pompeii keep your eyes peeled for Vesuvius – although this towering still-active volcano isn’t hard to miss! Jump out for a photo opportunity and a wander at the base of the volcano or keep driving and enjoy the coastal views on to the city for this extra 30 minute drive.
They say Rome wasn’t built in a day, and it may not be suited to a day trip either as it’s a seven hour round trip. But if you do fancy braving the journey it could be your perfect road trip!

– Take turns to spot a car and look at its number plate
– With the letters, try to make a word that uses all the letters
– One by one, say the word out loud – the longest word wins!
