Fuerteventura a Filmmaker’s Landscape

When you think of a galaxy far, far away, we doubt Fuerteventura of the Canary Islands comes to mind.

So you might be surprised to find that it’s been the number one destination of choice to portray worlds many lightyears from here. Its rocky, sandy and volcanic landscapes have made it an out of this world filming location for franchises like Star Wars and Doctor Who.

If you’re a ‘Whovian’ (Doctor Who fan, for those not familiar) who’s fantasised about visiting Gallifrey, then time travel to Fuerteventura.

Never-ending sand dunes and fiery volcanic rocks create the ideal surroundings for the Doctor to park the Tardis. In the series 9 finale we saw him in a Zygon Invasion that spanned from Gallifrey’s sparse Drylands to the Mountain of Serenity. Why not follow in the Doctor’s footsteps and explore the area yourself?

Head to the northern Bayuyo region to discover Fuerteventura’s rugged terrain. Here you’ll find extinct volcanoes of times gone by that have shaped the scenery we see today.

For Star Wars fans, we bet you’re counting down to the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, coming out in 2018. Follow a young Han Solo and Chewbacca before the Rebellion hits as they encounter Lando Calrissian and others from the Original Trilogy. As they embark on their adventure keep your eyes peeled for Jandia National Park in the south of Fuerteventura.

As one of the main filming locations, the burnt orange backdrop along with large sand dunes could possibly mean a return to the planet, Tatooine.
