Lovers of the liberal arts won’t be stuck for things to do in Orlando. The area is home to dozens of museums, from the Chocolate Kingdom to the Orlando Museum of Art. Our favourites include The Cornell Fine Arts Museum in Winter Park, which has an impressive collection covering European and American art, and also a section on Contemporary artists. Winter Park is just north of Orlando, and here you’ll find more great museums, historic buildings, parks and charming brick-paved streets.
The Orlando Science Center is a really fun and informative museum with its own domed theatre, observatory, and four floors of exhibit space. If you go to the observatory at night, you’ll get the chance to view the planets of our solar system, as well as galaxies and even nebulas! History buffs should head to the Orange County Regional History Center, which takes visitors back to Central Florida’s Native American beginnings, spanning around 12,000 years of history.
“The City Beautiful”
Orlando has been given this nickname for good reason, and there are great ways to see the wildlife here that don’t involve theme parks. Just over two hours’ northwest of Orlando is Manatee Springs State Park, which during the winter months, is home to hundreds of manatees that have travelled upriver from the Gulf of Mexico to the warm spring waters. With a beautiful turquoise river, the area is great for swimming and snorkelling. Fans of ecotourism can go to one of Orlando’s many lakes and rivers for a kayaking tour, to see the area’s flourishing wildlife.
If you’re looking for horseback riding, both the Rock Springs Run Trail and the West Orange Trail are beautiful locations, and alternatively can be explored by foot or bike. Other parks in the area include Lake Eola Park in downtown Orlando, where you can enjoy a romantic boat ride and see the official fountain of Orlando for yourself. There’s also a grill restaurant here, and stunning views of Orlando’s skyline.
As well as a thriving arts scene and a plethora of nature preserves to choose from, Orlando has some of the best entertainment in Florida. The music scene here is pumping, and one popular haunt for live music fans is the House of Blues. An eclectic range of bands and performers play here, and you can have a delicious meal whilst watching some captivating performances.
If you want a more involved dining experience, head to Sleuth’s Mystery Dinner Show, where you’ll take part in a comedy murder mystery alongside a lavish meal. Orlando’s Amway Center hosts not only great sports but musical performances too, so check out what’s on before your trip. Otherwise go along to support Orlando’s basketball team – Orlando Magic.
