This hearty dish is packed full of Mediterranean flavours. The tomato sauce oozes deep, rich tones and complements the fragrant meatballs. It’s the cumin in the meatballs that gives them their unique taste. This dish is traditionally served with rice and a seasonal salad.
Soutzoukakia meatballs recipe
500g minced beef
2 cloves garlic
2 large onions, finely chopped
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tbsp oregano
1 tbsp freshly chopped parsley
1 tsp ground pepper
2 tbsp plain flour
3 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp sugar
2 tbsp tomato puree
1 small glass of wine
How to make Soutzoukakia
1 – In a bowl, mix together the mince, egg, breadcrumbs, garlic, half of the onions, cumin, oregano, parsley and ground pepper.
2 – Shape the mixture into long ovals and cover lightly in flour.
3 – Heat the olive oil in a frying pan and cook the meatballs for around 5 minutes, until they are just brown. Remove them from the pan and set to one side.
4 – Fry the remaining onions in the pan for approximately 3-4 minutes.
5 – Add in the tomatoes, sugar, tomato puree and wine. Bring the mixture to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes, to allow the sauce to thicken.
6 – Add in the meatballs and simmer for another 15 minutes, stirring carefully and regularly.
