In an interview with bestselling author Jill Mansell we have managed to get you the inside scoop on her latest novel, Three Amazing Things About You, along with three amazing facts about Jill herself.
Jill explains why this particular book is so very special to her:
‘Out of all the novels I’ve written, this is the one I’m most proud of. It’s the first time I’ve had a clear-cut plan for a book, knowing that certain pretty dramatic things had to happen to the various main characters.’
Dealing with very serious issues such as life-limiting illness and organ donation, it’s a poignant romantic novel about a young woman whose time is running out and has been inspired by Jill’s past experiences:
‘Having worked in a hospital for almost 20 years, I do think that people facing up to severe illness acquire a new way to view life and death, and I really wanted to explore and demonstrate that. I hope I have.’
As with all her books, it will make you laugh and cry, and Jill hopes readers will take away an important message about organ donation, a cause she has always been passionate about:
‘It not only saves lives, it really helps the friends and families of those who have died and had their organs donated. Again and again, these people have said it made them feel their loved one hadn’t died completely in vain. If just one person reads my book and decides to sign up to the organ donor register as a result, I’ll be so happy.’
Three Amazing Things About You might be a bit of a different read from her previous novels, but how does she go about finding inspiration and crafting her hugely popular stories?
‘I am endlessly nosy and love to eavesdrop in bars and restaurants or on journeys. When I’m on a train up to London for example, I always yearn to know why everyone else is going there. I also love the way falling into conversation with strangers can result in discovering you have things or friends in common – all of us are so much more interlinked than we think. And nothing is ever wasted – you never know what small but fascinating discovery you might be able to use in a book.’
3 Amazing Things About Jill Mansell
You’ve now heard about her latest novel, here are some amazing things you may not know about Jill herself.
1. ‘I once won a competition in a nightclub by tearing a fat telephone directory in half, faster than any of the other competitors who were all big muscly men. They were outraged…’
2. ‘I never have the faintest idea what the characters look like in my books. Even at the very end, I still have to refer to my list of their physical attributes to find out if their hair is long or short, blonde or dark. I know everything about their personalities but have no visual image of them in my head. (Is that a bit weird? Most people seem to know exactly what their characters look like!)’
3. ‘I’ve now sold over ten million copies of my books worldwide. That is pretty amazing to me, considering I never expected to sell a single one!’
