Valletta – European Capital of Culture 2018


Valletta takes the European Capital of Culture crown in 2018. Expect this tiny walled city to come alive with an unmissable line-up of events, telling the stories of past, present and future Malta.

Elegant and packed with historic gems, Valetta is worth a visit on any Malta getaway. But to mark this extra special year, 2018 promises to bring music, theatre, film and the arts to its’ charming cobbled streets. So there’s even more reason to pay a stop by!

It’s going to be a yearlong fiesta, so with so much to see and do we bring you our top picks from this cultural extravaganza.

Valletta Green Festival

Date: 4th– 6th May

Location: Valletta – St George’s Square

A new addition to Valletta’s calendar in recent years, this annual festival transforms the urban capital into a carpet of colour. And 2018 is set to be its biggest yet. In a city made mostly of bricks and mortar, locals are encouraged to create their own green spaces, led by example with an explosion of floral splendour. Over 80,000 potted plants will cover the square in a huge floral installation – you won’t want to miss it. Wander the secret gardens at the Archbishop’s Palace otherwise not open to the public.

Valletta Pageant of the Seas

Date: 7th June  

Location: Grand Harbour, Valletta

Pomp and circumstance meets modern culture in this amazing seafront spectacle. Take a seat along Valletta’s Grand Harbour waterfront for whacky races, carnival floats, a regatta of yachts and much more. Or jump on a boat yourself for a front row view! And as the sun sets it really comes alive as fireworks are set off to the sound of canons from the historic city walls. It’s a must see.

Island of Enchantment

Date: 1st June – 12th September

Location: Citadella, Gozo

Island of Enchantment’ is a Gozitan musical created, performed and directed by citizens of Gozo and runs for 8 weeks in the summer. Island life is told through singing and dancing in this enchanting and powerful production. Take the ferry and visit beautiful Gozo for the day, fitting in a show before heading back to the Maltese capital for lots of other events.

Valletta Film Festival

Date: 16th – 25th June

Location: City wide

Crime, romcoms, thrillers – whatever genre makes you take a seat with a tub of popcorn, you’re sure to find it at the Valletta Film Festival! Open-air cinemas perfect for balmy evenings will show films, documentaries and shorts from all over the world as they compete to be named ‘best in show’. With over 90 screenings, Valletta will be a film buffs must see in June.

Science in the City

Manoel Theatre Malta

28th September

Malta’s science and arts festival comes to the capital for one evening only. From City Gate to St George’s Square, scientific encounters will line the route to delight visitors of all ages. The street art, science busking, music, children’s puppet shows, live experiments, talks, theatre and much more is all free to be enjoyed.
